Southeastern Electric Cooperative is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to lead and administer the cooperative’s HR functions — including talent management, benefits, compliance, and employee engagement — while supporting a culture of excellence and collaboration.

This position is located at our main office just south of Sioux Falls, SD at 47077 276th St, Lennox, SD 57039.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Human Resources Generalist will serve as a trusted partner to leadership and employees alike. This role oversees all areas of human resources, including talent acquisition and retention, benefits administration, employee relations, compensation, HR compliance, and HRIS management. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong communication skills and a passion for building programs that support people and organizational success.

Key Responsibilities

Talent Planning & Development

  • Lead efforts in talent acquisition, onboarding, and retention to attract and retain high-performing employees.
  • Support employee growth through development, career planning, and succession initiatives.
  • Partner with managers to promote a culture of engagement and continuous improvement.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Administer employee benefits and coordinate with payroll to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor benefit programs and legislation (COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, etc.) and recommend updates as needed.
  • Maintain market data to develop competitive compensation structures and manage job descriptions.

Employee Relations & Policy

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to employees and management on workplace issues, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies.
  • Lead initiatives that strengthen workplace culture and employee engagement.
  • Conduct exit interviews and provide recommendations for improvement.

Training & Compliance

  • Recommend, coordinate, and support employee and leadership training opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with all employment laws, including FMLA, workers’ compensation, affirmative action, and safety programs.

HRIS, Data & Office Management

  • Maintain and enhance HRIS systems and data for reporting, workforce planning, and compliance.
  • Manage office services, vendor contracts, and administrative functions that support daily operations.
  • Provide HR insights and data-driven recommendations to support organizational strategy.
Job Requirements
Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Psychology, Business, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of HR experience required.
• SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred.
• Strong knowledge of HR laws, best practices, and compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, coaching, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive issues with discretion.
• Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook); experience with HRIS systems preferred.

Working Conditions:
• Standard office environment.
• Occasional travel and overnight stays may be necessary for training and development.
• Regular and reliable attendance is expected.
• Typical schedule: Monday–Friday in office 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
