Position Summary:
The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for performing service, repair, installation, and maintenance of HVAC systems as assigned by the Service Manager. This role requires a strong commitment to quality workmanship, safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction. The technician will work independently and as part of a team, while also providing guidance and hands-on training to apprentices.
This position assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs HVAC systems in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer guidelines, and applicable building and mechanical codes. Systems may include hydronic piping and boilers, furnaces, air conditioning units, and rooftop HVAC equipment in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.
Core Job Functions:
- Perform all work in a safe manner while following company and site-specific safety policies
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
- Monitor worksite safety and look out for the safety of fellow team members
- Diagnose system malfunctions in a variety of HVAC systems
- Repair, install, and service piping systems including iron, steel, copper, and PVC
- Inspect equipment, structures, and materials to identify defects or sources of failure
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and other equipment safely and appropriately
- Analyze information, evaluate options, and make sound decisions to resolve issues
- Maintain high-quality standards while completing assigned duties
- Respond to emergency service calls to address immediate safety or operational concerns
- Explain service findings and pricing clearly to customers
- Collect payment for services rendered in accordance with company procedures
- Follow direction from the Service Manager, Foreman, and Superintendent
- Provide daily guidance and on-the-job training to assigned apprentices
- Support apprentice development through instruction, coaching, and feedback
- Maintain a positive attitude that contributes to strong morale and teamwork
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Competent, dependable, organized, and team-oriented
- Strong verbal communication skills and basic computer proficiency
- Solid understanding of basic math, architectural plans, drawings, and mechanical designs
- Ability to follow directions and complete tasks with minimal supervision
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet performance goals
- Strong customer service skills with a problem-solving mindset
- Valid state and/or city licenses required for work locations
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle and travel to job sites in multiple states
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED required
- Field experience in residential and commercial HVAC systems preferred
- Boiler experience in residential and/or commercial applications preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Fine motor skills and hand/arm strength for gripping, handling, and operating tools
- Ability to lift and operate power tools, including overhead
- Ability to work at heights using ladders, scissor lifts, or similar equipment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, twist, grasp, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday
- Ability to see (20/20 vision, natural or corrected), hear normally, and communicate effectively
- Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, oils, and vibrations
- Ability to wear required safety equipment, including respirators
- Ability to safely navigate construction sites with uneven surfaces, debris, floor openings, heights, and limited lighting
- Ability to work assigned schedules as required by job demands
Work Conditions:
This position requires work in residential, commercial, industrial, and public environments, both indoors and outdoors. Technicians may be exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, mud, and water.
Work may involve elevated areas, including ladders, lifts, rooftops, and scaffolding. Exposure to loud noise environments is expected; appropriate hearing protection will be provided and required.
