Position Title: Intern - Cultural Affairs Coordinator - Summer

Minimum Salary: $20.00 per hour
*APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.
The Cultural Activities Coordinator Intern will work under the supervision of the Cultural Activities Coordinator to assist with the planning and coordination of cultural and religious programming for inmates within the correctional facility. This role will also provide support with routine operational tasks in a secure correctional environment, offering the intern an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and exposure to correctional management practices.
Learning and Support Areas:- Become familiar with Department of Corrections' policies, institutional operations memoranda, and procedures through observation and guided training.
- Assist in routine tasks related to controlling and supervising inmates under staff direction.
- Observe and learn modern concepts and practices related to the rehabilitation of criminal offenders.
- Support administrative tasks related to personnel management and program operations.
- Assist with gathering information for investigations under supervision.
- Learn about custody and security requirements and help with basic documentation or resource tracking.
Skill Development Opportunities:- Shadow staff to understand how operations and programs of a correctional complex are supervised.
- Participate in team activities to build effective working relationships with employees and agency representatives.
- Assist with compiling data or preparing reports to support policy and procedure reviews.
- Help identify and document potential areas for improvement in processes as directed.
- Support conflict resolution efforts by providing administrative assistance during problem-solving sessions.
- Observe investigative processes and assist with organizing findings.
- Learn strategies for maintaining composure during stressful situations by observing crisis response protocols.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.
