Position Description:
The mission of the South Dakota Department of Health's (SD-DOH) Division of Disease Prevention and Control (DDPC) is improving the health and well-being of South Dakotans by monitoring disease, providing education, communicating timely, and collaborating with community partners to prevent disease. The enteric disease epidemiology intern works within DDPC to maintain and enhance infectious disease surveillance and response activities, with a particular focus on enteric diseases.

Primary intern responsibilities include conducting disease investigations of enteric diseases (campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, and giardiasis), assist with outbreak response activities, collaborate on an article for publication in the SD Public Health Bulletin on infectious disease trends, and creating materials to support surveillance efforts for infectious disease and increasing public awareness.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications: Applicant should have completed two semesters in the areas of biology, microbiology, chemistry, or epidemiology by the start of the internship, and should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred qualifications: Applicant should have familiarity with web-based applications, knowledge of basic statistics, and the ability to communicate medical and public health topics effectively and professionally to the general public.

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
