Position Description:
These positions will work with the team responsible for managing all aquatic resources in southeastern South Dakota. Hired interns can expect to receive training and experience with fish population surveys, fisheries research studies, aquatic habitat and fishing access projects, aquatic invasive species surveys, and public information, outreach and education events. Specific skills and abilities taught to hired interns may include operation and maintenance of various netting gears (trap nets, gill nets, seines, etc.), electrofishing, operation and maintenance of boats, boat motors, trailers and vehicles, data recording and procedures associated with watercraft inspection and decontamination. Hired interns may also have the opportunity to work with regional law enforcement, game management and wildlife habitat programs.
Coursework in biology, ecology, fisheries science and natural resource management as well as experience in fisheries work and operation of boats and trailers will be given consideration, but are not required for this position
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
