Position Description:
The informatics intern works with the South Dakota Department of Health's (SD-DOH) Division of Disease Protection and Control (DPC) to maintain and enhance our electronic disease surveillance system and processes. The mission of DPC is improving the health and well-being of South Dakotans by monitoring disease, providing education, communicating timely, and collaborating with community partners to prevent disease.

The intern will have the opportunity to work work on various projects such as:

  • Learn about disease surveillance data and reporting
  • Learn about electronic case reporting (eCR), how DPC uses electronic case data, and advance processes for working with the data
  • Assist with mapping of eCR data elements into the electronic disease surveillance system
  • Assist with updating python scripts to import data elements into the electronic disease surveillance system and process documentation
  • Learn about data visualization by using dashboards


Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
