Position Description:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to join our Medical Services Division within the Social Services Department. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in claims processing systems and IT support to the Medical Services Division. The candidate will have an opportunity to learn a great deal about Medicaid claims processing, federal reporting requirements on projects, applications and programs, and will assist with compiling reports and metrics as well as building efficiencies into the metric reporting lifecycle during the period of their internship. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn, possess strong analytical skills, and demonstrate a commitment to providing excellent service to our stakeholders.
  • Claims Processing: Learn and assist with the processing of medical claims, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • IT Support: Learn to address and resolve IT tickets related to the claims processing systems, providing timely and effective solutions.
  • Data Analysis: Learn to analyze data related to claims and IT issues to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Documentation: Learn skills to maintain accurate records of claims processing activities and IT ticket resolutions.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with team members and other departments to support the overall goals of the Medical Services Division.
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent support to internal and external customers, addressing their needs and concerns promptly.

Special Projects including assisting with requirements for system modernization due to the new Big Beautiful Bill act helping Medical Services Modernization team strategize solutions to meet the requirements of the bill and other initiatives. Assisting with data entry and redesigning the operational reporting system for Medical Services with assistance from the MS Modernization Manager.

The intern will be responsible for assisting DSS and 3 rd party vendors on a large scale project on data governance as well as interface control documentation and interface management plans. Other special projects and duties as assigned by the Medical Services Modernization Manager.

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant degree program (e.g., Healthcare Administration, Information Technology, Business Administration).
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and healthcare systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and software applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Education or experience with the following:
Medical coding, healthcare administration, statistics, business, information systems, or other related medical and non-medical fields.

Basic Understanding of Medical Terminology:
  • Familiarity with common medical terms and codes used in claims processing.
  • Healthcare Systems: Awareness of how healthcare systems operate, including the roles of various stakeholders (e.g., providers, payers, patients).
  • IT Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of information technology principles, including software and hardware troubleshooting.

  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze and interpret data related to medical claims and IT issues.
  • Technical Proficiency: Competence in using claims processing software and IT ticketing systems.

Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
