Position Title: Intern - Outdoor Education
Supervisor: Jason Nelson
Agency: Department of Game, Fish and Parks
Location: Brookings, SD
Minimum Salary: $17.88 per hour

*APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.

Position Description:
Intern will assist education staff with programming needs at both the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center and the Dakota Nature Park. Interns will primarily be responsible for developing and providing instruction in the following areas: hunting and shooting skills, archery education, firearm safety, fishing skills, wild game processing and cooking, nature interpretation, and outdoor skills education. Intern will organize and host outdoor special events, train volunteers, and assist with the supervision of Young Naturalist summer employees. Additional duties may include maintenance and cleaning of the educational building, grounds, and educational equipment (archery equipment, canoes, kayaks, firearms, and fishing poles). Training is provided.

Qualifications :
  • applicant must be a part-time/full-time student at a college or university and at least 18 years of age;
  • able to work independently;
  • capable of providing care for reptiles, amphibians, and insects;
  • comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather and lifting at least 50 pounds;
  • able to speak publicly and engage with participants of all ages;
  • have patience when working with new volunteers, young students, and people of all ability levels;
  • preference will be given to South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions;
  • preference will be given to students with coursework in the following: biology, natural resource management, speech, education, marketing, and/or public relations or customer service;
  • knowledge of native plants and animals is preferred;
  • enthusiasm is a must!!

By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
