Position Description:
The mission of the South Dakota Department of Health's (SD-DOH) Division of Disease Prevention and Control (DDPC) is improving the health and well-being of South Dakotans by monitoring disease, providing education, communicating timely, and collaborating with community partners to prevent disease. The vectorborne disease epidemiology intern works within DDPC to maintain and enhance infectious disease surveillance and response activities, with a particular focus on vectorborne diseases (VBD).

Primary intern responsibilities include conducting VBD case investigations (e.g., West Nile virus, Lyme disease), participating in tick and mosquito surveillance activities in the field, assisting with outbreak response activities, and contributing to data analysis and reporting. The intern will also have an opportunity to collaborate on an article for publication in the SD Public Health Bulletin on VBD surveillance trends.

In addition, the intern may assist with public education and outreach initiatives by developing prevention materials and engaging with community members at health fairs, state parks, and other events.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Applicant should have completed at least two semesters in biology, microbiology, chemistry, or epidemiology by the start of the internship, and should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicant should have coursework or experience in entomology, familiarity with web-based applications, knowledge of basic statistics, and the ability to communicate medical and public health topics effectively and professionally to the general public.

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
