Position Description:
An intern at the SD Rehabilitation Center for the Blind will work as a rehabilitation teaching assistant in the Employment Skills Training program and may assist in the skills of blindness training area when needed. The intern will assist the Employment Skills Instructor with individualized training activities that help clients with disabilities build confidence, develop job skills, and prepare for employment. Duties may include assisting with clerical tasks, assembly work, other individualized work activities, and the weekly World of Work class covering employer expectations, job search strategies, interviewing, and other employment skills. The ideal candidate is interested in rehabilitation counseling, human services, special education, psychology, or adult education. Experience working with people with disabilities is beneficial but not required.
Preference will be given to South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions. Consideration will be given to those with specific coursework in the following areas: rehabilitation counseling, special education, social work, psychology, counseling, adult education, and/or knowledge of blindness or disabilities. The candidate needs to have computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
