Position Title: Water Rights Engineering Intern

Position Description:
The Water Rights Program is responsible for administration of the appropriations of water in South Dakota and the Dam Safety Program. Water is the property of the people and water rights law sets forth that development of water resources of the state are to be put to beneficial use to the fullest extent of which they are capable for the public benefit. This intern position will assist the Water Rights Program in surveying observation well top of casing elevations, surveying outlet elevations of existing dams, survey lake water levels, measure water levels in observation wells, assisting engineering staff conduct dam inspections and writing dam inspection reports, and other duties as assigned. The position involves field work and extensive travel (3 out of every 4 weeks is likely). Overnight travel is required and transportation during work activities will be in a state vehicle.
Qualifications:
The applicant should be familiar with engineering design considerations, the ability to use engineer criteria and mathematics to solve problems, the ability to effectively communicate, and the ability to use Microsoft products (Word and Excel) and ArcGIS.
Preference will be given to students with a background in engineering and/or surveying coursework (e.g. agricultural engineering, geological engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.).
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
