The Department of Public Safety, Division of Administration is looking for a motivated individual to fulfill an Internal Control Officer position. The position serves in a leadership role responsible for overseeing, developing, implementing and maintaining the department's internal agency-wide internal control system to ensure compliance, mitigate organizational risks, and enhance operation efficiency. This position would include oversight of monitoring federal grants and fiscal administration support with year end financial reporting.

Duties include:

  • Developing and maintaining a system of internal controls as defined by the State Board of Internal Controls.
  • Provide information, guidance, and training to department staff on internal controls and financial systems.
  • Reviewing and updating policies and procedures as they relate to grant monitoring.
  • Assisting in the grant monitoring process.
  • Assisting in the fiscal administration of federal and non-federal grant requirements.
  • Assisting in the year-end financial reporting.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, or a related field and 1-2 years of progressive experience in business, accounting or related field is preferred. Knowledge and abilities may have been acquired through a combination of education and work experience that enable the incumbent to possess the required attributes for successful job performance.

Knowledge of:

  • Governmental Accounting and Auditing principles.
  • Internal Controls Framework and risk assessment.
  • State and federal compliance requirements.
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Query and other desktop tools including pivot tables.


Skill to:

  • Analyzing complex systems and identifying control weaknesses.
  • Communicating technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Facilitating training and promoting a culture of compliance.
  • Preparing detailed reports and presenting findings to leadership.


Ability to:

  • Comprehend and apply pertinent laws, rules, and policies.
  • Conduct research, compile, and analyze financial data.
  • Internally review/audit grant programs.
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Perform in a deadline driven environment.
  • Think critically and propose practical solutions.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
