This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position with the Human Services Center. For more information on the Human Services Center, please visit https://dss.sd.gov .

This position will diagnose, provide treatment and work closely with a supportive team to provide medical services spanning from adolescents to elderly to meet the complex medical and social needs of people living with psychiatric and substance use disorders in a comprehensive manner in an inpatient setting.

This is a salaried position and is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

Duties include:
  • consultation in diagnosis and treatment of acute medical conditions;
  • management of complex chronic medical conditions;
  • medical clearance for patients being admitted into the hospital;
  • stabilization of patients for transfer to higher level of medical care in acute medical emergencies;
  • supervision of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants in providing medical coverage for inpatients;
  • collaboration with Psychiatrists in monitoring side effects of psychiatric medications;
  • assisting the Admissions Department and Social Work Department in arranging for safe and appropriate transitions of care;
  • attending Physician for geriatric units in the hospital share on call rotations with other medical providers;
  • professional resource in developing and implementing appropriate policies and procedures for Geriatric program;
  • serve on various medical staff committees.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must be a graduate of an accredited Medical School and Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Residency and licensed to practice medicine in the State of South Dakota. BE/BC preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • methods and principles of medicine;
  • diagnosis, care and treatment of patients;
  • Palliative care;
  • principles, methods and procedures for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions;
  • Psychotropic medications.

Ability to:
  • analyze records, reports, test results or examination information to diagnosis medical conditions of patients;
  • explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients;
  • prescribe appropriate medications, therapy and monitor results;
  • interpret laboratory reports, x-rays, and EKGs;
  • exchange ideas, information and opinions with others to formulate treatment plans;
  • work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to collaborate with colleagues;
  • communicate effectively both orally and in writing .
