The Landscape Architect (Erosion Control and Landscape Designer) designs and prepares erosion and sediment control plans and landscaping plans to protect the environment and enhance the roadside along the State highway system. Duties may include, but are not limited to: designing erosion and sediment control plans for highway construction projects to ensure the erosion and sediment control plans are in compliance with the Department of Transportation's environmental commitments and other environmental regulations; creating, assembling, and revising erosion and sediment control plans to ensure accurate representation of proposed erosion and sediment control needs for Department of Transportation construction projects; designing landscaping plans for highway construction projects by determining plant and landscaping material placement to enhance and beautify the State highway system; creating, assembling, and revising landscape plans to ensure accurate representation of proposed landscaping for Department of Transportation construction projects; developing and maintaining a list of approved erosion and sediment control and landscaping products by evaluating and recommending approval/rejection of manufacturer's requested product(s) to ensure quality products are used for highway construction projects; and reviewing, revising and maintaining various manuals and providing technical advice to internal and external customers.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Erosion Control and Landscape Designer is approximately $77,375.00 annually.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants who have graduated from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in landscape architecture or a related field and/or experience in erosion and sediment control design are preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • accepted principles, practices, techniques related to roadside development, construction, and erosion control;
  • plants, soils and related materials used in landscape design projects and erosion and sediment control design projects;
  • environmental impact on the development of roadside areas;
  • theories and principles of landscape design.

Skill to:
  • read and understand construction plans;
  • use MicroStation or similar computer aided drafting (CAD) software;
  • mathematically calculate volumes and areas.

Ability to:
  • display high standards of ethical conduct;
  • adjust effectively to changing, new, or different situations at work;
  • attend to all details of assignments and complete work properly, accurately, and thoroughly;
  • treat customers courteously and is responsive to their needs;
