DESCRIPTION

This position starts out at $23.75 and up, depending on experience. 


$500 sign on bonus available!


No overnight travel!


Summary 


Operates diesel-electric locomotive, interpreting train orders, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations, to transport freight. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 



  • Performs pre-shift inspection of locomotives to identify equipment defects and verify specified fuel, sand, water, and other supplies.

  • Receives starting signal from brakeman and moves controls, such as throttle and airbrakes, to operate locomotive.

  • Interprets train orders, train signals and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations and time schedule.

  • Calls out train signals to brakeman for verification of meaning to avoid errors in interpretation.

  • Confers with brakeman or dispatch personnel via radiophone to issue or receive information or instructions concerning stops, delays or oncoming trains.

  • Observes track to detect obstructions.

  • Inspects locomotive after run to detect damaged or defective equipment.

  • Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.

  • Lubricates moving parts and performs repairs of locomotive.

  • Walks back and forth from the locomotive to the loading or unloading system.

  • Loads and unloads freight cars

  • Clean off the unloading pit.

  • Other duties may be assigned.


Education and/or Experience 



  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Other Licenses or Certifications 


Certificate of Qualified Locomotive Engineer for Train Service Engineer required.  Current certification is preferred, but expired certification is acceptable if issued within the past eight (8) years. 


Computer Skills 


To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of or be able to learn the following computer software or systems:



  • An individual should have knowledge of timekeeping software.

  • An individual should have the ability to learn how to report train movements using a computer. 


Physical Demands 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have the following physical abilities:



  • Use hands to finger, handle or feel

  • Reach with hands and arms

  • Talk and hear

  • Frequently required to sit

  • Taste or smell

  • Occasionally required to stand; walk on uneven or rough terrain; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, near vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception

  • Use a sledgehammer and/or bar to open or close railcar doors

  • Use a shovel while working under or around railcars 


Certain job tasks may require you to wear a half mask respirator in which you will need to meet the osha guidelines based on 1910.134(g)(1)(i).

  • The employee is regularly exposed to vibration.

  • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.

  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
