Job Summary:
This is a full-time 40 hours per week position. This position supervises staff with medication certification and is responsible for selection, training, evaluation and scheduling of staff. They work closely with medical staff, other SDDC staff, and individuals supported at SDDC. This position will work directly with clients at SDDC. The position is also expected to administer medications and treatments to clients and maintains medication records to ensure accurate administration of medications. This position will have scheduled hours but is expected to cover for employees and will have varied hours when coverage is needed. This position will ensure adherence to the procedures, guidelines, and policies of the facility. Responsible for monitoring compliance with safety codes and Title XIX requirements. The supervisor will maintain documentation required by agency policy and applicable accrediting and licensing bodies. Prepares related reports and documentation as required by facility policy and state and federal regulations. The supervisor reviews documentation provided to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timelines. Implements approved behavioral intervention techniques. Accompanies individuals to appointments as necessary. Providing support and motivation through interactions with clients. Participates in close observation of clients at SDDC. Redirects unacceptable behavior if possible and applies physical restraint if necessary, utilizing non-violent crisis intervention techniques to defuse potentially violent situations. Serves as a crisis response team leader during crisis intervention procedures and will actively participate as a member of the crisis response team. The supervisor will monitor, utilize, evaluate the provision of individualized support plans as well as communicate sufficiently to explain individualized support plans to employees.
Licenses and Certifications: Must complete the South Dakota Medication Certification course. A licensed nurse may delegate the administration of medications authorized only to unlicensed assistive personnel who have a minimum of high school education or the equivalent and who are registered with the Board of Nursing.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Current Medication Certification or past experience passing medications. Supervisor and leadership experience.
Knowledge of:
• basic health care;
• the needs of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities;
• policies and procedures in place at SDDC for individuals who are intellectually or developmentally disabled;
• effective methods of supervision;
• behavior management techniques, including measures for individual protection;
• the methods and techniques used in the training of developmentally disabled population;
• typical behavior at various levels of developmentally disabled individuals;
• capabilities and limitations of each functioning level of the developmentally disabled;
• techniques used in conducting training programs for developmentally disabled individuals;
• physical and emotional needs of institutionalized individuals;
• CPR and First Aid;
• scheduling process, including the scheduling software system;
• Crisis Prevention Intervention Techniques;
• administration of medication processes and relevant federal and state regulations.
Skill to:
• communicate information clearly and concisely;
• compare information and recognize discrepancies;
• use a computer and applicable data entry software;
• exercise tact and discretion in dealing with others.
Ability to:
• competently utilize the scheduling software system;
• supervise and provide work direction to staff in carrying out unit activities with a person;
• mentor, coach, train new employees;
• organize and meet timelines;
• exercise discretion and judgment and make sound decisions under pressure;
• monitor, utilize, and evaluate the provision of individualized support plans;
• communicate sufficiently to explain individualized support plans to employees;
• implement person-centered practices;
• recognize and properly react to atypical behavior;
• help developmentally disabled individuals achieve self-help skills, behaviors, and manners commensurate with their capabilities to enhance their quality of life and prepare them for community transition;
• follow established policies and procedures;
• relate well to developmentally disabled individuals and serve as a role model in demonstrating appropriate behaviors;
• follow instructions, keep records, and prepare narrative and numerical reports; including the ability to competently utilize/navigate each individual's electronic master record;
• instruct staff in the theory, practices, and procedures of treatment of developmentally disabled individuals and orient new staff to the units;
• establish and maintain good working relationships with staff.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
