This full-time administrative position with the Custer County Highway Department provides essential clerical and organizational support to the Highway Superintendent and department staff. The role involves managing daily office operations, maintaining accurate records, assisting with financial tracking, and ensuring smooth internal and external communication.

The starting wage ranges from $17.77–$18.58 per hour, depending on education and experience, and includes a full county benefits package.
The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced but structured work environment. Strong computer skills and experience in office administration or accounting are highly valued.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree in accounting, payroll, or administrative support preferred
Two (2) years of experience in an office, administrative, or secretarial role (or equivalent education/experience)
Knowledge of modern office practices and computer systems
Proficiency in general office equipment and software, with ability to learn department-specific systems (e.g., Dware)
Valid South Dakota driver’s license
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong attention to detail, accuracy in recordkeeping, and time management
Professional and courteous when dealing with the public and coworkers
Primary Duties Include:
Greet visitors, answer phones, and respond to routine public inquiries
Prepare and process invoices, claims, permits, purchase orders, and departmental requisitions
Track inventory, order supplies, and maintain office equipment
Manage accounts receivable, payments, and disbursements
Draft letters, memos, and administrative reports
Enter and update data related to equipment, inventory, and operations
Sort, distribute, and send incoming/outgoing mail
Maintain current documentation for licensing, insurance, and departmental records
Promote safety and compliance in all administrative duties
Support the department and Highway Superintendent with other duties as assigned
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week, year-round
Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM
No weekend or evening shifts required
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the day
Frequent use of hands for typing, filing, and managing documents
Occasional lifting and moving of up to 25 pounds
Visual acuity for reading printed and digital materials
