Outside Parts Sales Representative
Position Summary
The Outside Parts Sales Representative is responsible for growing parts sales and developing strong relationships with trucking companies, fleet operators, truck owners, repair facilities, and other commercial customers. This position will focus on promoting and selling heavy-duty truck and trailer parts while providing knowledgeable, dependable service to customers throughout the assigned territory.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the trucking industry and heavy-duty truck parts, excellent communication skills, and the ability to develop long-term customer relationships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain relationships with trucking companies, fleets, owner-operators, repair shops, and commercial accounts.
- Make regular sales calls and in-person visits to existing and prospective customers.
- Identify new business opportunities and actively pursue new accounts.
- Sell heavy-duty truck, trailer, and related parts and accessories.
- Promote the company's parts, service, and other capabilities.
- Provide customers with accurate product information, pricing, and availability.
- Prepare quotes and follow up on open quotes and sales opportunities.
- Assist customers with parts identification and product selection.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of heavy-duty truck and trailer parts.
- Work with the Parts Department to locate, order, and source parts when necessary.
- Coordinate with the Service Department to help meet customer repair and parts needs.
- Monitor customer purchasing patterns and identify opportunities to increase sales.
- Maintain regular contact with key accounts to ensure customer satisfaction and retention.
- Develop and maintain an organized customer call and sales follow-up schedule.
- Maintain accurate customer and sales information in company systems.
- Stay informed about new products, suppliers, pricing, and industry trends.
- Monitor competitor activity and provide feedback to management.
- Attend customer meetings, industry events, trade shows, and other sales functions as needed.
- Handle customer concerns professionally and work with management to resolve issues.
- Meet or exceed established sales goals.
- Represent the company in a professional manner at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Previous outside sales experience preferred.
- Experience in the trucking, heavy-duty parts, fleet, or transportation industry strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of heavy-duty truck and trailer parts is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of diesel trucks, truck repair, hydraulics, PTO systems, electrical systems, and related components is a plus.
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong sales and negotiation skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Organized with excellent time-management skills.
- Ability to prioritize customers and sales opportunities.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn parts and sales software.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Physical and Travel Requirements
- Travel throughout an assigned territory to visit customers and prospective accounts.
- Ability to drive for extended periods.
- Ability to enter truck shops, warehouses, fleet facilities, and customer locations.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work safely around heavy-duty trucks, trailers, shop equipment, and warehouse operations.
Performance Expectations
- Achieve established monthly and annual sales goals.
- Increase sales with existing customers.
- Develop new customer accounts and expand the company's customer base.
- Maintain consistent contact with key customers.
- Provide prompt and professional customer service.
- Follow up on quotes and sales opportunities in a timely manner.
- Build long-term relationships with trucking companies and fleet customers.
- Work closely with the Parts and Service Departments to provide an exceptional customer experience.
