GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This position performs library public relations, circulation, and clerical work. Completes marketing, promotion, and advertising for library services and programs. Maintains and updates the library’s website and social media accounts. Assists patrons at the circulation desk at scheduled times and covers other times as needed. Completes all steps necessary for managing and billing for overdue materials.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

  • Works under the immediate supervision of the Technical Services Librarian and the Library Director.

  • Assigns tasks to work-study students, interns, or volunteers as needed.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

  • The regular schedule for this position is Tuesday through Friday 8 am through 2:15 pm, and Saturday 9:30 am to 5 pm for a total of 32 hours a week.

  • Employees are required to have the flexibility to adjust their schedule when needed for programming and circulation desk coverage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Maintains and updates library website, calendars, and social media accounts; does basic digital photography.

  • Collaborates with individuals, groups, and organizations to promote library programming and services.

  • Solicits and publicizes library programs and activities.

  • Writes press releases and other library-related publicity materials; responds to media inquiries and interview requests.

  • Composes, publishes, and distributes monthly newsletter and calendar.

  • Updates and maintains content for the electronic billboard.

  • Maintains and enhances training manuals.

  • Monitors, tracks, and oversees notifications for overdue and replacement library materials; generates bills for lost and damaged materials.

  • Compiles and maintains statistical reports and distributes agenda packets for Board members prior to meetings.

  • Works with Friends of the Library group to assist in marketing, programs, and used book sales.

  • Creates attractive and educational displays to enhance the library experience and promote the use of library resources.

  • Greets visitors to the library and provides friendly, high-quality customer service to library users.

  • Performs circulation duties and procedures including: loaning and returning materials, placing reserves, checking in materials, shelving materials, checking for damaged materials, and interlibrary loan requests.

  • Responds to phone, email, and in-person questions.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists patrons in the use of library services and facilities.

  • Assists patrons with technology-related questions and issues; provides training for patrons using physical and electronic library resources.

  • Sorts through book donations and distributes for addition to the collection, used book sale, or recycling as needed.

  • Monitors, tracks, and oversees notifications for overdue and replacement library materials; generates bills for lost and damaged materials.

  • Assists with library programming as needed.

  • Performs other tasks, duties, and projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the following.

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in an appropriate field such as marketing, public relations, graphic design, or library science. Or, any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education is required.

  • Experience working with website development (WordPress or other content management systems), and knowledge of social media preferred.

  • Experience marketing/promoting programs and services preferred.

  • Library experience and customer service experience are preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Website design and content management systems such as WordPress.

  • Ability to design and create print and electronic promotional materials and signage using software such as Canva or Adobe.

  • Proficiency with technology including Microsoft operating systems and software programs (Word, Excel, Publisher), Google Documents, and Forms.

  • Ability to engage with community members in a warm, friendly, and responsive way with flexibility, and persistence.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

  • Ability to communicate with patrons and coworkers courteously and professionally.

  • Ability to problem solve in a positive, constructive, and supportive way.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be flexible, positive, and adapt to a busy and changeable work environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Experience operating standard office and library equipment such as audiovisual equipment, printers, copier, fax machine, and computers.

  • Detail-oriented and organized.

  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library
