This position is responsible for producing high quality diagnostic radiographs for offenders incarcerated within the South Dakota Department of Corrections.

What you will do:

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates radiological orders to determine positioning, test procedure needed and protective measure necessary for diagnostic testing.
  • Operates X-ray machines, fixed and portable, according to established guidelines.
  • Produces high quality radiographs that will assist medical personnel in diagnosing disease processes.
  • Evaluate finished product and equipment according to quality control standards.
  • Schedules radiological testing necessary to meet needs of offenders and/or test required.
  • Monitors system for logging all diagnostic tests performed according to offender name, number, location and test.
  • Prepare digital images for review by radiologist to include preparation of electronic information.
  • Scan dictation into electronic health record.
  • Cleans radiology equipment and provided sanitary environment for each exam.
  • Completes all related paperwork, bookkeeping and requisitions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Obtains and logs necessary quality control measures.
  • Travel to other facilities within the state as requested.
  • Analyze informatics tools to optimize technology access and improve daily operations for Clinical Services staff.


Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be registered or eligible to register with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) as a Radiologic Technologist in Radiography.

Required Competencies:

  • ability to provide direct patient care to offenders in a correctional setting;
  • must be able to operate radiological equipment and perform all radiological examinations;
  • ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
  • ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind;
  • computer proficiency is required;
  • excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team;
  • knowledge of various types of x-ray equipment;
  • must be able to work independently and as part of a team;
  • ability to meet work schedule and be flexible with schedule;
  • ability to analyze data and solve problems independently;
  • must maintain required credentials as applicable to this assignment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience providing radiologic care in a correctional environment;
  • experience with digital imaging;
  • experience working with an incarcerated population;
  • experience working with a diverse medical population as a Radiologic Technologist;
  • experience working with various types of x-ray equipment.


Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

  • lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
  • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.


Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
