Job Summary:
The mission of the South Dakota Department of Social Services is strengthening and supporting individuals and families by promoting cost effective and comprehensive services in connection with our partners that foster independent and healthy families.
The Office of Recoveries & Fraud Investigations (ORFI) identifies situations where social services benefit programs were obtained inappropriately and identifies and seeks recovery when the state is owed money if social services program benefits were overpaid due to error, fraud, or if other resources are responsible to pay first. ORFI is seeking an articulate professional who is organized, energetic, motivated, and dependable to fill the role of Recoveries Investigator. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating cases to ensure that recipients utilize benefits appropriately according to federal and state regulations.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Degree and/or work experience in a relevant field such as public administration, human services, public health, finance, health care administration, or a related field.
Knowledge of:
- programs within the Department of Social Services; including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, SNAP (Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program), Child Care, Energy Assistance and Child Support;
- investigative techniques and principles (preferred, but not required);
- preparing formal case action plans and reports;
- information management.
Ability to:
- establish, build and maintain cooperative and productive relationships internally and externally;
- gather and analyze data, reason logically and accurately, draw valid conclusions based on facts or evidence; and solve problems using common sense, reasoning, and resourcefulness;
- actively listen, elicit needed information, and provide concise information both verbally and in writing;
- obtain information from individuals who are reluctant to give information or who are not communicative;
- prepare clear and concise documentation, reports, and correspondence that reflect relevant facts;
- effectively plan, organize, and prioritize work activities to meet schedules and deadlines;
- read, interpret, and apply pertinent regulations
- utilize computerized data systems;
- work independently with minimal supervision.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
