Region Traffic Technician! Job Description:
The Region Traffic Technician conducts traffic studies, and prepares complete plan sections for traffic control, detours, permanent signing, traffic signals, roadway lighting, and flashing beacons to assist region programs.
Occasional in-state travel with overnight stays may be required.
Work assignments are frequently performed outside and around highway traffic.
A valid driver license is required.

Duties and Responsibilities: - conducts traffic safety studies for new sign locations, e.g., does traffic counts, speed studies, visual or turn movements, traffic volumes; and recommends changes where warranted;
- designs plans for traffic signals, permanent signing, flashing beacons, roadway lighting, school and pedestrian crossings, and pavement markings;
- marks regions' no-passing zones, making sure they are redone after overlays;
- designs traffic signs and sign supports for use in construction projects, in signing plans, and for replacements;
- designs and orders signs from commercial vendors and the state penitentiary, ensures fabrication is correct, and distributes as needed;
- designs plans sheets for permanent signing and pavement marking, including selection of standard plates, calculation of quantities, plan notes, and design of project-specific marking such as tapers, turn lanes, etc.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:
- Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD (preferred but not required);
- State of South Dakota Specifications (preferred but not required);
- Open Roads Designer software (preferred but not required).
Skill to:
- perform basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and determine rates of materials;
- operate computers and use Microsoft software.

Compensation:
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Region Traffic Technician $71,022.00 annually.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
