Salary: $32.43 - $38.02 per hour, depending on experience. Plus $5.00 night/$1.50 weekend differential and potential for overtime.

What you will do:
Registered nurses are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Documents in a accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive inmate medical records;
- Transcribes reports at change of shifts;
- Provides standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines;
- Preserves confidentiality;
- Provides physical care and treatments, administers medications, collaborates on treatment plans, employs infection control measures, provides crises intervention, interviews and triages offenders, and performs patient and staff instruction;
- Assists physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
- Ensures ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
- May occasionally be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
- Observes and reports the physical and emotional condition of offenders including the effectiveness of medications and treatments during triage, sick call, and emergency situations;
- Performs physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick-call, and emergency situations, employing basic nursing and assessment skills and protocol;
- Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
- Operates a variety of clinical equipment dictated by the type of equipment available in the assigned work unit;
- Informs supervisor of any violations of security or safety through the report writing process;
- Attends training programs as assigned, including successful completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self defense course.
- This position may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications :
- Applicant m ust possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Required Competencies:
- Ability to effectively treat patients on a daily basis in a variety of settings;
- Ability to follow patient confidentiality standards;
- Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical situations;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
- Excellent discernment and decision making skills;
- Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to details;
- Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full time basis;
Preferred Qualifications:
- Correctional nursing experience;
- Acute Care or Long Term nursing experience.
- Charge Nurse and/or supervisory experience;
Conditions of Employment:
The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:
- Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
- Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
- Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
- Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
- Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
- Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
