ABOUT THE POSITION
Are you a self-starter with strong communication skills who enjoys solving problems and helping people from all backgrounds? We need your skills to assist the citizens and taxpayers of South Dakota.
Revenue Agents are proactive decision-makers who work with individuals, businesses, CFOs, CEOs, and the legal and financial communities. They leverage the latest in technology, telecommunications, and data management systems. They are responsible for planning and conducting onsite examinations of business records and regularly work with taxpayers, their representatives, certified public accountants, and tax attorneys.
The South Dakota Department of Revenue encourages voluntary compliance with tax laws through direct taxpayer assistance and educational opportunities. In addition to Basic Tax seminars offered statewide, our educational program includes online training, webinars, group or industry-specific presentations, and one-on-one meetings with Revenue Agents.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Educate and assist taxpayers with South Dakota tax laws and licensing requirements.
• Review and license new businesses.
• Collect delinquent taxes following department procedures.
• Collaborate with a team of professional, dependable, and accountable colleagues.
• Use analytical skills to interpret tax materials and provide accurate information.
• Participate in department-wide initiatives to improve efficiency.
• Navigate and apply South Dakota tax laws to real-world taxpayer questions.

ADVANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
After four years of on-the-job training and development, advancement to the Senior Revenue Agent level (GJ) may be earned. The Business Tax Division also offers a Career Enhancement Program, which rewards agents with pay increases upon completion.
TRAINING
Successful applicants will be trained on state tax laws and codes. Occasional travel will be required for this position. A background check is required.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position with the Department of Revenue - Business Tax Division.
