Here at the HSC Alternative School, we believe in fostering a love of learning through inquiry-based instruction and personalized student support. You will be working on individualized curriculum and instruction for the student population in our Adolescent Services Program. This position will primarily work with instructing science to students of high school age with a variety of different abilities and learning styles. This opportunity lets you work with an exciting variety of students from all over the state and from all walks of life!
Hours for this position are generally 8:00 a. m . - 4:30 p . m . , Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays. Teaching work including things such as grading of papers, developing curriculum , working on lessons, etc. is done during the workday without the need to do extensive work outside of the classroom. There are no extracurricular duties required after normal school hours. This is a year-round teaching position and does involve some instruction during the summer months.
Licenses and Certifications:Candidate must have a current teaching certificate issued by the state of South Dakota or the ability to easily obtain a current certificate. This position will be teaching high school science. A science endorsement or experience in the field of science is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge of:
- teaching principles and practices;
- basic classroom management techniques;
- individualized curriculum development;
- techniques applicable to Individualized Education Plans and working with students who have special education needs;
- challenges faced by individuals with mental and/or emotional disabilities;
Ability to:
- communicate effectively with a variety of different learners
- to show patience and empathy for students in difficult situations
- adapt and change instructional practices to produce positive outcomes
- effectively manage behavioral concerns in the classroom
- develop curriculum and lesson plans to meet the individualized needs of students;
- take a collaborative approach to working with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate treatment and educational goals;
- establish and maintain positive work relationships with students and staff.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
