This position is day shift Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm
Summary:
It is responsible for designing, constructing, altering, and repairing a wide variety of sewn products using strong hand sewing skills and industrial machine operation. The role includes garment tailoring, fabric repair, precision stitching, and the custom fabrication of items such as covers, panels, padding, sensory safe products, and anti tamper enclosures. The individual selects appropriate materials, understands how hardware interacts with fabric under load, and creates custom items using measurements, draping, spatial reasoning, or prototyping, with or without patterns. Duties include inspecting completed work for quality and durability, reducing ligature and safety risks through thoughtful design, installing closures and hardware, and managing multiple projects in an organized workspace. Effective communication with internal staff is essential to clarify needs, expectations, and timelines while completing tasks accurately, and efficiently.
Licenses and Certifications: Possess or the ability to obtain a valid Driver's license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of sewing techniques, garment alterations, fabric repair, and the tools, equipment, and methods used in sewing fabrication and tailoring.
Knowledge of:
- Strong sewing skills, including hand sewing and industrial machine operation.
- Experience with garment alterations, tailoring, and fabric repair.
- Familiarity with different fabrics, threads, needles, and sewing techniques.
- Experience in custom fabrication (covers, panels, uniforms, specialty items, etc.)
- Inspects completed work for quality, accuracy, and durability.
- Knowledge of how hardware interacts with fabric under load.
- Creates and fabricates custom sewn items based on measurements, draping, prototyping, spatial reasoning, or project specifications. With or without a pattern
Skills to:
- Differentiate fabrics, threads, needles, and sewing techniques.
- Troubleshoot sewing machine issues and perform basic maintenance.
- Alter and tailor garments to ensure proper fit, including hemming, resizing, patching, and reinforcing seams.
- Precision stitching for high stress seams
- Create wall/fixture padding, protective covers, sensory safe items and anti-tamper enclosures
- Design items that reduce: ligature risks, sharp edges, breakable components
- Design solutions for unique behavioral or environmental needs.
- Creative adaptation when no pattern or template exists.
- Rapid prototyping and iterative improvement.
Ability to:
- Communicates with internal staff to clarify repair needs, design expectations, and project timelines.
- Follow instructions;
- Read, follow, or create patterns and measurements.
- Deal tactfully with others;
- Complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner;
- Operates and maintains industrial sewing machines, walking foot machines, heavy duty straght stitch, Zig-zag machines, sergers/overlock machines, cutting tools, and other related equipment.
- Selects appropriate fabrics, threads, and materials for each project and ensures high-quality workmanship.
- Maintains an organized workspace, tracks materials, and manages multiple projects simultaneously.
- Sew multiple layers of heavy materials.
- Install items like: Reinforced grommets, buckles and closures, zippers, padding and liners
