About the Role
As Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent, you will help lead and manage the City’s Solid Waste Department, including:
Transfer Station operations
Composting operations
C & D (rubble) sites
Residential and commercial waste collection
Recycling (single-stream and cardboard)
During the in-training period, you will:
Gain hands-on experience in all operational areas
Receive direct mentorship in leadership, budgeting, compliance, and long-range planning
Support regulatory compliance and operational excellence
Help guide continuous improvement initiatives
You will work closely with City leadership, regulatory agencies, elected officials, and the public — building both operational expertise and executive-level leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in planning, directing, and improving solid waste operations
Support budget development and financial oversight
Help oversee efficient collection routes and service delivery
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Supervise and develop full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff
Promote safety, customer service, and environmental stewardship
Coordinate equipment maintenance and operational resources
Respond professionally to service concerns and operational challenges

Work Environment
This role offers a balance of office leadership and field engagement. You will spend time:
Planning and supervising operations
Inspecting facilities and equipment
Supporting teams in active solid waste environments

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Associate’s degree or higher in solid waste management, environmental science, business administration, or related field strongly preferred (experience may substitute)
6–8 years of progressive solid waste or related experience
At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience
Experience with budgeting and financial oversight
Strong Microsoft Office skills
Valid South Dakota Driver’s License required
CDL Class A (manual transmission with air brakes) preferred but not required
