Job Title: FT Special Education Support Staff
Location: Bethesda Learning Academy
Reports To: Lead/Head Teacher or Director
Position Summary:
We are seeking a full-time compassionate, patient, and dependable Special Needs Assistant Teacher to support children with diverse developmental and behavioral needs in a daycare setting. This role focuses on creating an inclusive, safe, and engaging environment while working closely with the lead teacher to ensure all children receive individualized care and attention.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide one-on-one and small group support to children with special needs
Assist in de-escalating challenging behaviors using positive guidance strategies
Support children in daily routines, including transitions and structured activities
Assist with diapering and toileting needs while maintaining proper hygiene practices
Help feed children and encourage independence during mealtimes
Work collaboratively with the head teacher to implement individualized plans and classroom activities
Assist the head teacher in supervising and supporting children during field trips and off-site activities
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment
Aid in general daycare duties as needed, including cleaning, organizing materials, and supervising playtime
Communicate effectively with staff regarding children’s progress, behaviors, and needs
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Obtaining a Degree in Special Education
Experience working with young children, especially those with special needs, is highly preferred
Strong patience, empathy, and ability to remain calm in challenging situations
Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team
Basic understanding of child development and behavior management strategies
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move quickly as needed
Comfortable assisting children with personal care tasks
Work Environment:
This position operates in a daycare setting with active, young children. The role requires constant supervision, engagement, and interaction with children throughout the day.
