The Department of Public Safety is looking for a strong leader to administer the State Fire Marshal Office. The State Fire Marshal provides administrative oversight, leadership, and direction for the operation and management of all functions within the State Fire Marshal's Office and related programs. This includes the state boiler and pressure vessel inspection programs, fire safe cigarette program, adoption and enforcement of building and fire codes, oversight of fire investigation conducted by the office and management of the National Fire Incident Reporting System. This position offers the opportunity to promote fire prevention policy, strengthen public safety initiatives, and lead statewide efforts in building fire-safe communities. As South Dakota's State Fire Marshal, you will represent the state at the national level and build partnerships that advance fire safety for future generations.

Required: 24/7 availability based on situations. Potential to work in hazardous environments to conduct fire investigations.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• Strong leadership and administrative management skills.
• Ability to interpret, adopt, and enforce fire and building codes.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and public speaking skills.
• Strong research, analytical, and policy development skills.

Knowledge of:

• extensive experience in fire prevention, code enforcement, or fire service leadership;
• demonstrated knowledge of national and state building/fire codes, regulatory enforcement, and program administration;
• experience in developing policies, partnerships, and interagency collaboration;
• fire investigation process and procedures.

Skill to:

• maintain and develop strong relationships with local, state, and federal agencies as well as with the public;
• resolve problems as they arise, both effectively and professionally.

Ability to:

• collaborate with diverse stakeholders at the local, state, federal, and national level;
• develop and maintain partnerships with state, federal, and local agencies including ATF, SD DCI, SD DOH, Bureau of Human Resources & Administration, Division of Wildland Fire, and others to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
