Job Description

Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) in Mitchell, South Dakota invites applications for a 10-month full-time position of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Student Success Advisor. TRIO SSS is a federally funded program dedicated to providing academic, financial, career, and personal support services to increase the retention and graduation of first-generation, low-income students or students with disabilities. The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a master’s degree in education, student affairs, or a related field. (Candidates possessing a bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of two years of work experience in an academic setting, will be considered.)

  • One year direct experience with first generation, low income or students with disabilities.

  • Experience in planning and coordinating programs.
  • Ability to apply student development theory.
  • Ability to provide leadership development and supervision of student employees.
  • Ability to ensure federal TRIO SSS grant objective compliance.
  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to work both independently and as a cooperative team member.
  • Possess a commitment to the mission of DWU and the university’s values of learning, leadership, faith, and service.

Essential, ongoing responsibilities associated with the position include:

  • Provide academic, financial, career, and personal advising/coaching to assigned program participants. Act as academic probation advisor. Maintain accurate records to monitor participant academic progress.
  • Establish and maintain consultations with Director of Student Support Services.
  • Coordinate activities to encourage student engagement.
  • Plan, prepare, and implement TRIO SSS retention program activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and participate in ongoing program evaluation.
  • Develop and present educational events, opportunities and service projects.
  • Remain current regarding best practices in peer mentoring, tutoring, advising, and retention.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of SSS to complete the objectives of the program.

This position will begin in September 2025. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is 100% funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in conjunction with DWU. Funding for a new 5-year grant cycle begins September 1, 2025, and continues through August 31, 2030. The university has held a TRIO grant since 1979 and plans to submit for renewal in 2030.
