The Role
The Underwriting Risk Supervisor leads and supports a team of senior underwriters while ensuring underwriting decisions align with established policies and risk standards. This role balances hands-on underwriting work with people leadership, quality oversight, and cross-department coordination. You’ll have an integral role in building a strong culture leading to customer satisfaction by being a key connection point between underwriting staff, leadership and internal partners.
What You’ll Do
- Lead, coach, and support a team of senior underwriters to ensure consistent, high-quality risk decisions
- Perform senior-level underwriting work as needed to support team volume and complexity
- Train and onboard new team members and support ongoing skill development
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, team meetings, and performance reviews
- Review underwriting outcomes to ensure alignment with policies and procedures
- Partner with sales, business development, technology, and other internal teams to resolve underwriting challenges
- Monitor workflow and volume, adjusting staffing support and schedules as needed
- Review and approve timecards, PTO requests, and schedules
- Escalate exceptions, risks, and operational issues to leadership when appropriate
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience supervising or leading an underwriting or risk-focused team
- Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and decision-making
- Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Solid analytical and judgment skills
- Comfort working with standard office technology and internal systems
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience auditing or reviewing underwriting decisions for consistency
- Experience partnering with sales or business development teams
- Background in regulated financial or insurance-related environments
- Experience supporting process or training improvements
