This position provides patient care within the scope of practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by preparing and administering prescribed medications and treatments, IV therapies, maintaining medical records, and monitoring work of subordinates to ensure quality care is provided and in compliance with patient care procedures and department policies. The role requires the application of basic nursing principles, practices, and techniques following established healthcare procedures and standards. Employees in this role usually operate in a patient care environment where the focus is on the healthcare of individuals. To be successful in this role, employees seek guidance and advice from more experienced colleagues and are focused on gaining the knowledge and experience to perform more independently and participate in work of higher complexity. Incumbent works in a long-term care setting at the South Dakota State Veterans Home.

Reduced tuition for continuing education and some flexibility of shift may be available. Onsite, low-cost housing may be also be available; cost is dependent on square footage.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or eligible to be licensed in the State of South Dakota.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
All certificates and/or tests required for performance at this level must be obtained and/or completed. On the job training is available.

Knowledge of:
  • Professional Nursing Theory and practices;
  • recent developments in the field of professional nursing applicable to the area of assignment;
  • clinical procedures.

Ability to:
  • keep records;
  • follow instructions;
  • operate a variety of medical equipment;
  • make reports on observations;
  • apply general nursing techniques and practices;
  • maintain a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients;
  • communicate effectively;
  • deal effectively with patients and staff.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
