This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position with the Department of Corrections. For more information on the Department of Corrections, please visit https://doc.sd.gov/ .

The warden has full accountability and responsibility for the Mike Durfee State Prison (MDSP), Yankton Minimum Center (YMC) and Rapid City Minimum Center (RCMC). This includes providing leadership, planning, operational direction, budgetary oversight and direction, and daily oversight and management of the prison and two minimum centers. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Prisons for the Department of Corrections (DOC). Extensive employment and criminal background checks will be conducted on candidates prior to selection.

MDSP is a medium custody prison with the capacity of 1,117 offenders including specialized housing units with the current population at 1,037 offenders. Vocational and rehabilitative programs are offered to offenders including the Governor Housing Project. YMC is a minimum custody center with the capacity of 332 offenders with the current population at 324 offenders. RCMC is a minimum custody center with the capacity of 420 offenders with the current population at 402 offenders. Both minimum centers allow for the participation in work release for gate pass eligible offenders.

Total budget for all three facilities in FY24 is $27 M with 209 FTE.

Duties include:
  • overseeing the administration of programs, including security, treatment, budget, and education to ensure safe, efficient, and lawful functioning.
  • planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating new department initiatives and projects, including response to recently passed reforms impacting the states' corrections system.
  • developing, interpreting, and administering policies and procedures. Interpreting and implementing state and federal mandates, judicial rulings, laws, administrative rules, and civil service rules.
  • developing working relationships with a variety of governmental officials, law enforcement agencies, community partners, and citizen groups.
  • setting financial goals for the prison and managing the budget.
  • monitoring the success of current activities and continually seeking to improve them, basing changes on the industry, legislation, and research.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or a related field, and at least 10 years of experience in corrections or law enforcement administration is preferred.
