Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation, servicing, and maintenance of equipment, and related work in the Water Treatment Plant and Water Distribution system.

The shift for this position is 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday, 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm Friday and Saturday.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Works under the direction of the Water Department Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Operates plant equipment to control the flow and maintain the proper conditions for treatment.
  • Performs a variety of daily tasks, such as inspecting pumps and monitoring chemical feeders, motors, gauges, and valves.
  • Samples and tests water as appropriate to determine treatment requirements and progress of treatment; prepares water samples for testing by the State Health Department.
  • Makes periodic rounds of the plant to check equipment operation and record data.
  • Receives telephone calls and answers inquiries from members of the public and other agencies.
  • Reads water meters and inspects and performs a variety of maintenance activities to ensure proper water distribution.
  • Records daily and monthly treatment logs.
  • Cleans and maintains Water Department buildings and equipment and assists in maintaining the appearance of the Water Department grounds as necessary.
  • Responsible for assisting with snow removal around fire hydrants, flushing water mains, exercising valves, reading meters in manholes, and changing/installing meters and associated equipment, at the direction of the Water Department Supervisor.
  • May be required to work weekends and hours outside normal working hours.
  • Performs manual labor such as unloading and storing chemicals.
  • Required to participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Installs service lines, water mains, valves, hydrants, meters, and other equipment associated with the Distribution and Treatment system.
  • May be required to work in emergency water main repair situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess a valid South Dakota Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain a class A CDL within one year of hire.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a Class I Certificate from the State of South Dakota for both Water Treatment and Distribution within 2 years of hire.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a Class II Water Treatment and/or Distribution Certification from the State of South Dakota within 3 years of hire.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Skill in the operation of listed equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Requires occasional use of motorized forklift, pickup truck, back-hoe, excavator, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Must possess basic computer skills for data entry and plant operation.
