Job Description

The City of Lennox is seeking qualified, motivated and responsible applicants for the position of Water and Wastewater Specialist.  This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection and treatment, water treatment and water distribution.   Experience in public utilities and water/wastewater certification desired.  Must maintain compliance with federal and state labor and safe employment laws and regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate and fine-tune controls on treatment plant equipment, including valves, pumps, and motors. Skillfully read and interpret meters and gauges to ensure efficient operations.
  • Monitor, repair, and upkeep wastewater system lift stations, including debris removal, pump and float cleaning, weekly inspections, and executing minor repairs as required.
  • Collect samples and conduct various lab tests to assess water and effluent quality.
  • Inspect and conduct repairs on treatment plant equipment to maintain optimal functionality.
  • Undertake general plant maintenance tasks such as sweeping, cleaning, sanding, and painting equipment and facilities.
  • Locate, and mark sewer, water, and storm sewer lines as part of the one-call process.
  • Skillfully operate trucks, tractors, and other motorized equipment.
  • Fulfill any other duties and functions necessary for the proper performance of this position, as assigned by the City Administrator, Streets Superintendent, or Utilities Superintendent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic principles of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, generators, pumps, hand and power tools, detection devices, lab equipment, and more.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment equipment operation and routine maintenance.
  • Understanding mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles related to wastewater treatment.
  • Basic understanding of office and computer equipment
  • Perform wastewater treatment plant and sewer system maintenance.
  • Efficiently and safely operate trucks, tractors, and related equipment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Recognize inefficient, unusual, or dangerous operating conditions.
  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduation or GED certification.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in utility water systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair of mains, pipes, and services, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid Class I South Dakota Water Distribution Certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid Class I South Dakota Wastewater Collection Certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid Class I South Dakota Wastewater Treatment Certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid certification in Certified Spraying (G, 9, 4) within one year of hire.
  • Willingness to work standby and extended hours when required.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (with no restrictions) with air brake endorsements within 90 days of hire
