Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs technical duties in support of the county’s weed and pest control program. This is a seasonal position, generally scheduled from May through October as needed. Overtime may be required based on operational demands.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Performs weed control duties; measures and mixed chemicals; loads chemicals on truck and trailer; applies pesticides in accordance with labels.

  • Performs mosquito control duties; loads chemicals and tests equipment; applies chemicals in accordance with labels; monitors larval activity as needed.

  • Performs building, equipment, and vehicle maintenance.

  • Provides public information regarding weed and pest control activities, staffs booth at County Fair.

  • Completes and files weather reports; completes and maintains application records, invoices, maintenance records, and billing records.

  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of weed and pest control chemical application guidelines.

  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.

  • Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures and related federal, state, and local guidelines.

  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.

  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.

  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Weed and Pest Control Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include state regulations and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.

  • The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

  • The purpose of this position is to participate in county weed and pest control operations. Success in this position contributes to the minimization and control of weeds, mosquitos, and other pests.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county employees, property owners, vendors, and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of speacialized training in the fiels of work, in addition to a high school diploma.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain South Dakota commercial applicators license.
