As a Weights & Measures Inspector, you'll play an important role in protecting both consumers and businesses by ensuring accuracy in the devices used in commerce - from grocery store scales and fuel pumps to agricultural equipment. Your work helps ensure every transaction in South Dakota is fair and reliable.

This position offers independence, flexibility, and variety. Inspectors plan their own schedules, travel to different areas, working with different business types, and work directly with businesses to explain results and promote compliance. A state vehicle is provided for travel.

The most qualified candidate will be based in Aberdeen, Watertown, or the Northeast region of South Dakota.

What You'll Do
  • Independently schedule and conduct inspections of scales, meters, and other measuring devices used in commerce.
  • Verify device accuracy to ensure consumers and establishments receive fair treatment.
  • Identify and explain violations to business owners and operators.
  • Complete inspection reports to document compliance with state and federal standards.
  • Represent the Department of Public Safety as a professional, knowledgeable resource in your community.

Working Conditions
  • Daily travel within the region, with some overnight stays.
  • Physical activity such as lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing in and out of vehicles, and working outdoors in varying weather.
  • Comfortable working at heights and around combustible or hazardous materials.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must have and maintain a Class A or B CDL with Air Brakes and the ability to drive a Manual Transmission.
  • Subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow-up, and return-to-duty drug testing.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot devices and equipment.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence in explaining laws, regulations, handbook requirements, and inspection findings to business owners.
  • Strong organizational skills and self-motivation to manage an independent schedule.
  • Familiarity with agriculture or commercial trade is helpful but not required.

Helpful Knowledge (not required)
  • Weights & Measures Program related to scales and meters.
  • NIST Handbooks 44, 130, and 133.
  • State and federal laws and regulations related to inspections.

Ability To

  • Repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, divide, convert units of measurement, and perform algebraic functions.
  • Read and comprehend written directions, policies, statutes, and regulations.
  • Develop strong working relationships with the public, partner agencies, and fellow inspectors.
  • Manage time effectively, develop efficient schedules, and meet deadlines.
  • Address requests and solve problems professionally as they arise.
  • Make logical, reasonable decisions and set priorities.
  • Adapt to a variety of personalities and handle challenging situations constructively.
