Job Description

Divine Mercy Pastorate (Includes the parishes of Christ the King, Immaculate Heart of Mary (St Mary’s), and Saint John Paul II) in Sioux Falls is seeking a full-time Coordinator of Youth Discipleship to coordinate 6th-12th grade religious education, oversee Confirmation classes, and lead youth groups.

The coordinator implements a faith formation program that prepares the youth for living out their faith at college, and also builds a community of faith, assists the youth in discovering and growing in their Catholic faith, and provides opportunities to grow in prayer and relationship with God.

The coordinator also collaborates as needed with Bishop O’Gorman Junior High and High School to build a vision for engaging Catholic youth both in the public schools and with those who are homeschooled.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Middle and High School Faith Formation (6th-12th grade)

  • Recruit, equip, and form catechists/core team to lead and teach middle and high school religious education classes on Wednesday evenings.
  • Work closely with the Director of Catechesis, who oversees K-5th grade religious education, to provide a smooth transition to middle school faith formation.
  • Be aware of vocational discernment opportunities within the Diocese and encourage youth participation.
  • Develop personal relationships with youth and parents and be available for meetings with them as needed and necessary.
  • Collaborate, in particular, with Bishop O’Gorman Junior High School’s chaplain, campus minister, and theology teachers to form relationships with those students from our pastorate. This may include leading a Bible study at O’Gorman during the school day or after school.

Confirmation Preparation (10th grade)

  • Recruit, equip, and form catechists to help with the Confirmation classes on Wednesday evenings.
  • Encourage candidates to get involved in parish ministries.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the yearly Confirmation Retreat.
  • Coordinate the celebration of the sacrament with the Diocese of Sioux Falls and the Pastor.

Youth Group (6th-12th grade)

  • Lead and coordinate youth groups on Sunday evenings with the Coordinator of Youth Ministry.
  • Walk along and disciple students who desire to follow Christ and learn how to pray.

Other Duties Include:

  • Communicate vocation discernment opportunities within the Diocese.
  • Attend and participate in staff and faith formation meetings.
  • Submit regular communications to the bulletin, website, social media, etc.
  • Establish a program calendar and budget for the fiscal year.
  • Support the other staff members on the faith formation team with their events when needed (OCIA, First Reconciliation and First Communion, Family Formation, Retreats, Pastorate Parish Mission, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • Active, practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church, with a demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Church.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Catholic Studies or a related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Catholic theology, teachings, and sacramental preparation.
  • Available to work Wednesday and Sunday evenings, and other evenings when applicable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate to youth, parents, and volunteers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Desire to work collaboratively within a fun, dynamic, close-knit team.
  • Has a passion for evangelization, catechesis, and family life and helping youth to know, love and serve God and follow Jesus Christ as disciples.
  • Ability to plan and execute engaging and age-appropriate activities and events.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances..

This salaried position works under the direction and guidance of the Pastor, Fr. Paul Rutten, the Director of Discipleship and Evangelization, and the Director of Catechesis.
